10 Morning Routine Ideas That Will Boost Your Energy

Oh, those mornings.
Some days you feel tired even if you slept for 8+ hours (or maybe because of it).
If you are tired of feeling tired in the morning, here you can find 10 easy morning routine ideas that will energize your day right from the start.

A lot of people (and I can say I know a bunch of them) are convinced that they can’t function without having their morning coffee. And then another one and another one and so on.
I bet you know someone like that, too.
It’s a pretty funny image, don’t you think?

I witnessed that myself. As that person woke up, he went directly to the kitchen to switch on a coffee machine and even half sleeping with his eyes closed waited until his coffee was done.
I have to point out that it was a small italian coffee. Not an entire kettle.
But coffee, as well as energy drinks, are a double-edged sword in regards to fatigue reduction.

On one hand, they both provide a short-term solution, but they can show their negative side in the long run.
Too much caffeine can make us jittery, dehydrated, or cause us digestive or sleep problems (don’t forget the diuretic effects) and too much energy drinks can cause serious heart and blood vessel problems.

So with that being said let’s jump right into it.

1. Get out of bed

Seems obvious, right?
Well, a lot of people like to stay in bed for a while after they wake up.
And since this can easily turn sideways, it would be better if you get out of bed right after you open your eyes.

Just to be sure, that you don’t drop off back into the sleepland.
If you can control it, it’s perfectly fine.
You can combine these first minutes with breathing exercises, or meditation.

2. Stretch your body

And by stretching I don’t mean pandiculation (it’s the subconscious stretch immediately after you’ve opened your eyes, yawned, and stretched your arms over your head).

I mean consciously stretch your arms, neck, legs, hips and so on.
Stretching is beneficial at any time of the day, but by doing it first thing in the morning it can bring you relief from any pain or tension that might be accumulated while sleeping.

It also helps increase your blood flow and set up your body for the upcoming day.

3. Have a nice glass of water or two

Assuming you slept whole night (7 hours more or less) what means that you didn’t drink any water for a couple of hours, so your body desperately needs to rehydrate itself.

Drinking water on an empty stomach is very beneficial.
It increases your energy, improves your skin, speeds up your metabolism and prevents headaches.

4. Wash your face with cold water

I know that taking a cold shower in the morning is recommended, but it is also enough to splash cold water on your face (it works just the same), especially if you plan to continue with No. 8 (do some cardio or exercise).

If you feel that you look like a newborn Shar-Pei in the morning, try that cold water. It will tighten your skin, so it helps you look refreshed.

It also improves your circulation, which can help skin look healthier, at least temporarily.

5. Let light and fresh air in

Don’t worry, the first part is applicable even when you’re waking up before the sun has already risen.
It will boost your mood as well as spark your creativity.

Not to forget that sunlight is a fantastic source of vitamin D and that it increases the level of serotonin, too.

By the way, if you open your curtains early enough, you can see how the sun is rising from its night sleep and adorning the sky with beautiful colors.

6. Breathing exercises

Practicing breathing exercises, especially deep breathing, increases oxygen in the blood circulation which boosts your energy levels.

These exercises have a bunch of other benefits, eg. reduced blood pressure, stress, as well as muscular tension.

7. Go for a walk

There are not many things that boost your energy in the morning like moving your body.
The brisk walk in the morning is simply refreshing and energizing.

In case you don’t have much time for a walk in the morning, just open the windows, let the fresh air into your house (or apartment) and move your body indoors.
Of course, it isn’t the same as spending time outside, but it’s much better than nothing.

8. Shake it off with some cardio or exercise

As I mentioned in a previous point, moving your body reduces fatigue and makes you feel energized like magic.
Not only in the morning but whenever you decide to perform this activity.
And if do it regularly, it also helps you to prevent symptoms of conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Oh sure, I got it, when you wake up feeling groggy (in other words fatigued) the last thing you want to do, is exercise.
But you could at least try it. Maybe that is what your body needs.
I know that it isn’t a piece of cake (metaphorically, of course).
Waking up earlier is challenging enough.
The point is that it is a vicious cycle.
When YOU don’t break it, nothing changes.

It will always be hard to start.
It’s like with any other beginning.
At first, it may be tough, but it gets easier as you go on.
And after a couple of weeks or months you may actually start to look forward to it.

On the other hand if you don’t have time (or mood for that matter) for longer workout, one or two series or jumping jacks or burpees can do the trick.

9. Drink some tea or coffee (if you like)

If you are one of those people who think they can’t start a day until they have their first coffee, well, the truth is that you absolutely can. And you should.

I am not telling you stop drinking coffee a all, just change the time of the day.
You can enjoy your coffee later on (and this comes from someone who managed to drink daily 10+ ristrettos for several years.)

Drinking tea is simply a delicious way to fill your body with antioxidants in the morning.
Yet it still contains enough caffeine to give you that wanted energetic boost, without making you jittery or anxious.

10. Fuel your body with a healthy breakfast

I saved the best for last for a reason.
If you decide to follow these steps, keep breakfast on the last place.
Especially if you plan to do some exercise.
It will help you to burn more calories.
And eating before workout may cause you stomach upset.
So burn some calories first and refuel your body later.
